President's Message
What a pleasure it was this week to carry out my first (and most probably my last) new member induction. We welcomed Ric Mejias of the well-known Berrima Retreat to the ranks of Rotary fellowship and look forward to his contributions to our Events team and in Community Service activities.  I suspect Ric will keep us on our toes in these areas!

We also welcomed back e-Rotarian Bruce Hansell from the Berrima RFS who displayed the very impressive LED lighting system that we contributed to, which will be of great benefit to his unit in attending motor vehicle accidents during the night hours.  He was then subjected to the usual grilling by Frank Rodrigues about his career in insurance and later in farming,  and entertained us by providing a few anecdotes about his brushes with famous people along the way.  Bruce also made a plaque presentation to Allen Cupitt in recognition of Acenet’s contribution to improving the Internet connectivity of the Berrima RFS unit.

Berrima Marketplace Playground Upgrade
As mooted in my last message, the Council approved the draft Master Plan for the Marketplace for public viewing over the next few weeks. This Plan incorporates three stages of development of the West and East components of the park, with Stage 1 focussing on the playground and associated infrastructure to improve access for youth with disabilities.  I encourage you to visit the Council website at https://www.yoursaywingecarribee.com.au/berrima-marketplace and provide your support for this project.  I also plan to attend a community meeting in Berrima on the 9th of June as they discuss the plan and develop their feedback to Council.

Youth Working for Youth Soiree – Ladies in Black
Thanks to the sterling efforts of Lyndall Dalley and her Events team, the evening set aside as a Berrima District fundraiser on the 14th of June is SOLD OUT!  Well done team.  For those of us who are lucky enough to have booked, please note Lyndall will need assistance at the 20-minute interval to serve wine and a snack to 180 people.

Children’s Emergency Medical Fund
In case you are not aware, this fund has been set up at the District level to offer support to needy families with sick children.  It is administered by the partner of the District Governor, or his or her nominee, and is funded by donations from clubs in the District.  Our Club usually holds a raffle at the Changeover Dinner with the proceeds going to the fund.  It has apparently not had many calls for assistance recently, and  is looking for potential candidates. It is available to any family in our area where there is financial difficulty because of a child’s illness. This could just be things like the need to register the car in order to transport a sick child to specialist treatment, or because the family finances are unable to accommodate a particular type of treatment. If you know of any family where you think there may be such a problem, please contact me on whitederekd@gmail.com and I will convey the situation to District.

International
On 6 June HandUp Congo's team leader for Building a Healthy Congo, Dr Vera Sistenich, eloquently launched the 2019 Rotary Inspirational Women's Awards at NSW Parliament  Club members will recall that last year Vera was named Inspirational Woman of the Year by the Rotary Clubs of NSW.  Pictured is Vera (right) with Sue Wayward, Rotary D9675 District Governor.  Nominations are now open in all categories at the following link : https://rotarydarlingharbour.org.au/projects/riwa/nomination/

2019 RCBD Changeover Dinner
One of the highlights of our Rotary year is fast approaching, and Geri Gardiner and I are getting our act together.  We have settled on a date that fits in with our President Elect’s busy overseas travel schedule over the next couple of months – so please put Wednesday the 26th of June in your diaries.  We have decided to hold it at the Scottish Arms, East Bowral, with a selection of main courses for your delectation, as well as a welcome drink and some nibbles - all for the princely sum of $40 a head.  To book, please click on the link below.
You will note when you book that we would appreciate it if you could select a meal choice for each person – thus making  the chef’s job a bit easier – but this is not compulsory.  Friends and family  are welcome to join us for this event.

On another note, could all Directors please start drafting their annual reports so I don’t have to chase you too hard in the final days.

This Weeks Meeting ...
On Wednesday 12th June we will hear from Rotarian  Lee  Borradale, who will talk about his background and involvement in Rotary via the interview process.  We are expecting to hear from Allen Cupitt in the following week with an update on all things connected to the state of telecommunications in general, and access to broadband in particular.
