From The President
Another great meeting last week with a presentation from our Honorary Member, Jennifer Star PHF, founder of Tara.Ed, being the highlight.  This was particularly pleasant for me as I have heard so much about the wonderful work of this great young lady but had never had the opportunity to meet her in person.  I was not disappointed I assure you.

Over the 10 years that the Club has worked with her on her projects in India, Bangladesh and Afghanistan she has achieved so much with very limited funding – including engaging with over 18,000 students and a multitude of local teachers.  She works roughly along the lines of the “learning to fish” principle, don’t just go and help the kids but instead guide the local teachers on how to educate their students better.  Jennifer has plans for new programs in new countries and it is obvious that her new son, Sebastian, is hardly going to slow her down.  I hope we will be able to continue to assist this Bowral High graduate achieve her dreams well into the future.
It was also an unusual meeting in that our members were outnumbered by the visitors.  Not only did Jennifer’s parents and infant son attend, but there were also a number of people there who had been associated with Tara.Ed over the years, some of whom had travelled to the Asian continent with her a number of times.  No wonder she achieved recognition as NSW Young Australian of the Year in 2012.  Go Jennifer!

The rest of the meeting was somewhat colourless by comparison.  However, we did get the opportunity to thank Ian at the Bowlo for his catering services over the year, and to celebrate our last meeting there for the calendar year by breaking Christmas crackers and hacking into a delightfully sinful chocolate cake to mark the occasion.

There will be no meeting on the 12th December as our Christmas Party is Thursday the 13th of December at Exeter Croquet Club (5 pm) and afterwards for tapas at the Tap House in Moss Vale (6.30 pm).  If you get in quick we may be able to squeeze in a couple more people ... You don’t have to know how to play croquet as there will be some training, but spectators who just want a bit of a laugh will also be welcome. There will be Pimms & Cucumber sandwiches during the croquet then we are off to the Taphouse at Moss Vale for some Tappas at 6.30.  The cost per person has been set at $50 which seems very reasonable for what promises to be a fun afternoon and evening.  Please bring along as many family and friends as you can to show them that Rotary is not all about dull meetings and boring procedural stuff.

AGM

Our AGM was held on Wednesday the 5th December at Bangkok House in Mittagong. We were treated to a sumptuous 5-course banquet and a smoothly run meeting under the experienced supervision of our Honorary Member, David Cummins.  All positions for 2018/19 were filled except for the seemingly unpopular one of Membership Director.  As I said at my Induction, this should really be a joint responsibility for all our members rather than putting the onus on just one individual.  However, our President Elect, Shelley Boyce, will be consulting on suitable strategies for the future to bolster our numbers.

I also reported on progress (or in some cases, lack of it!) with respect to the playground upgrade at Berrima and the Mental Health First Aid initiative.  On the former, we are working closely with Council on improving the master plan for Berrima Marketplace and ensuring that grant funds are utilised effectively.  On the latter, there is still a plan to work on a number of promotional segments on 2ST but this won’t happen now until the new calendar year.  There is also a need to further co-ordinate with other mental health initiatives in the Highlands to make sure we are complementing rather than competing with them.

In case you can’t make it on the 13th, a VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS and a HAPPY NEW YEAR to you and yours.  Next Club meeting is planned for the 16th of January to prepare for our repeat presence at the Australia Day activities in Berrima the following week.

Annual Southern Highlands InterClub Bowling Competition

Thank you to Ross Craig from Moss Vale Rotary for again organising the Annual Southern Highlands InterClub Bowling Competition on Friday 30th November 2018.  This was our third year running and we entered two teams.  Thank you to Alana and John Saunders, Mat Froome and Melissa Meredith and Lyndall McGrath who brought along a collection of Mentors and Candidates from RYLA 2019 - William Weekes, Maddy Fern, James Quiggan and Julia McGrath.  Despite youth being on our side we missed out on first prize and maintained our steady position ... We'll get you next year !!

On the subject of RYLA we have a candidate - Julia McGrath.  Julia is planning on coming along to our Christmas Party to share her pre-RYLA perceptions ... and will be back in February to talk about her RYLA experience.  I have added the booking link to the RYLA dinner if anyone will be in Canberra on Tuesday the 15th January 2019.  It's a pretty special experience, run by the RYLArians, with an amazing Keynote Speaker.
