From The President
Welcome to the March edition of The Berrima Banter.  To take advantage of the last few days of daylight saving we decided to undertake the Berrima River Walk and then head to Feast @ Berimma for a brief evening meeting and social event.  The weather was far from kind to us with hail and thunderstorms passing through Berrima at the precise time we had planned our walk.  We have postponed it and plan to revisit the idea when daylight saving returns in spring.

The weather didn't deter us from our meal and we wish to send out a big thank you to Ann and Phillip at Feast @ Berrima for hosting our social evening.  The food was delicious and it was accompanied by lots of wonderful conversation.

At out meeting on the 8th March we re-inducted Mr Paul Webb and welcomed him into the Rotary Club of Berrima District.  Paul comes to us from the Rotary Club of Holroyd.  He originally joined Holroyd in 1996 and he has a long family connection with that club.  During his time with them Paul was involved with a number of very successful Charity Golf Days.  Welcome Paul its good to have you on board.

I'd like to draw to your attention the article in this Banter on the District Training Assembly to be held in Canberra on the 29th and 30th April.  I encourage you to consider attending.  Registrations close on the 23rd April.

Don't forget to keep the 4th June free ....

SOUTHERN HIGHLANDS SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING CHALLENGE

Southern Highlands students put on their thinking caps at the annual Science and Engineering challenge.  Primary and secondary students  competed in challenges that will teach them about topics such as earthquakes, managing an electricity grid, hoverboards and missions to Mars.

The Challenge was held over two days at the Mittagong RSL and more than 500 students took part.  Day one for year 6 students was held on 20th March , with more activities held on 21st March for high school students .

The Senior Student Challenge was won by Frensham.  Students from Frensham will now go on to  compete in the state challenge in August.  The state winners will compete at the national championship in September.

More than 170000 students have competed in science and engineering challenges across Australia since it was established at the University of Newcastle in 2001.  Last year 250 students from 14 primary schools in the Southern Highlands took part in the event.

The annual event is run by the Rotary Club of Bowral Mittagong, with assistance from Berrima District Rotary Club and the Southern Highlands and Tablelands Regional Group of Engineers Australia.

ROMAC
Sandra Mahlberg and Yvonne Robson brought us a ROMAC (Rotary Oceania Medical Aid for Children) update.  Sandra is a retired Midwife and has been involved with ROMAC for 29 years.  During that time they have looked after 48 children a year through an Australian/New Zealand partnership with an annual turnaround of $1,000,000, 40% of which is funded by Rotary.

ROMAC's medical board have difficult decisions to make.  They choose to treat children where the treatment will be life changing and life saving.  Heart operations, for example cost between $60,000 and $70,000.  There is a memorandum of understanding between Canberra Hospital and ROMAC and the hospital treats 4 children free of charge per year.  ROMAC pays the hospital $5,000 for each subsequent child.

ROMAC look after the children and their support person (usually the mother) from their arrival in Australia, through the treatment and their convalescence and departure from Australia.  Sandra houses the parents during the surgery and the parents and child during the convalescence period.  It can be quite a challenging time because of the cultural differences.  Apart from language barriers most of them have never seen lifts, escalators, dishwashers, washing machines and so on.

Sandra has been referred to as a Guardian Angel and in 2014 received ACT's Senior Australian of The Year award.  For further information on ROMAC please visit their website https://www.romac.org.au/

WHAT'S HAPPENING AT BOWRAL DISTRICT HOSPITAL
We were visited by Valerie Jovanovic and Steve Hall from NSW Health to discuss the redevelopment plans for Bowral District Hospital.  The redevelopment was borne out of a promise from the Government to invest and provide for the future.  The existing hospital is 126 years old and investigation revealed that the age of the infrastructure and the increasing needs of the community highlighted its need for upgrading.  $50,000,000 has been earmarked specifically for Bowral.

NSW Health have prioritised the clinical needs of the hospital :
  1. Adult inpatient accommodation
  2. Peri-operative suite
  3. Close observations unit
  4. Emergency department
  5. Outpatient services
  6. Pharmacy
  7. Maternity and children's services
  8. Clinical support
  9. Non-clinical support
  10. Medical records.
NSW Health has given its assurance that all current services will remain an grow with our growing population.  The government has asked NSW Health to look into a private/public partnership to help fund the much needed improvements to the hospital.  NSW Health often enter into private/public agreements - The public system often purchases private health services, such as providing additional surgical beds in public hospitals (for example).

The planning has a long way to go.  NSW Health have yet to secure a private investor although Ramsey Health have shown interest.  Ramsey are the logical partners as they have the current lease over the adjacent Private Hospital.

HUGH EVANS - What Does It Mean To Be A Citizen Of The World?
Hugh Evans is an Australian humanitarian. Evans is the co-founder of both The Oaktree Foundation and the Global Poverty Project. He has received domestic and international accolades for his work in promoting youth advocacy and volunteerism in order to reduce extreme poverty in developing countries.  We viewed his latest TED talk - What Does it Mean to be a Citizen of the World.  It was very thought provoking and highly recommended viewing.
